Puppy training routines

Goal for month one

Do not chase perfect obedience. Focus on four foundations: toilet routine, crate comfort, bite inhibition, and calm handling.

Week 1: settle in and structure

  • Take puppy out after sleep, food, play, and every 1 to 2 hours.
  • Reward toileting outside immediately.
  • Introduce crate with food and short calm periods.
  • Start name game: say name once, reward eye contact.

Week 2: basic cues and impulse control

  • Train sit, down, and hand target in 2-5 minute sessions.
  • Teach "wait" at doors and before meals.
  • Prevent over-arousal by ending play before chaos starts.

Week 3: social exposure done safely

Introduce new surfaces, sounds, and people gradually. Keep distance from overwhelming triggers. Pair new experiences with treats and calm voice.

Week 4: consistency and daily rhythm

  • Set fixed wake, meal, walk, nap, and bedtime blocks.
  • Increase crate duration slowly while puppy stays relaxed.
  • Add short leash walking practice in low-distraction areas.

Common beginner errors

  • Too much freedom too early in the house.
  • Long training sessions that exhaust attention.
  • Inconsistent household rules across family members.
  • Accident punishment instead of supervision and prevention.

30-day daily checklist

  • Toilet schedule followed
  • Two short training sessions completed
  • One calm socialization experience
  • Enforced nap blocks
  • Short grooming or body handling practice
